Xi Jinping meets with UN chief, stresses China’s commitment to multilateralism

BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping met with visiting United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Beijing on Friday, stressing China’s commitment to multilateralism and the UN. Xi said that China will cooperate closely with UN to uphold the international order and make concerted efforts to address global challenges. Guterres praised China’s important role in safeguarding world peace and promoting common development, saying that the UN values China’s support.

Xi pointed out that facing the current global challenges, all countries should strengthen mutual respect, unity and cooperation, and jointly uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. He underlined that China will continue to firmly support the work of the UN and firmly support multilateralism. Xi expressed his appreciation for Guterres’s commitment to deepening cooperation between the UN and China. China is willing to work with the UN to continue to play a constructive role in promoting world peace and development, Xi said.

Guterres said that the UN highly appreciates China’s important role in safeguarding world peace and promoting common development, and highly values China’s support for the UN. He said the UN is ready to strengthen cooperation with China and jointly address global challenges. Guterres arrived in Beijing on Thursday for a three-day visit to China after attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Uzbekistan.

Xi said that he welcomed Guterres’s attendance at the SCO summit and thanked the UN for its positive contribution to the summit, which is of great significance in promoting regional security and stability. Xi pointed out that the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative proposed by China are open to all countries and aim to meet the common needs of the international community. China is willing to work with the UN and all parties to implement these initiatives to make positive contributions to addressing global development and security challenges, Xi said.

Guterres said that he looked forward to working with China to strengthen the UN-China partnership and jointly tackle global challenges.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also attended the meeting.
