France fashion bill aims to end ultra-thin models on catwalks

A French bill that seeks to ban ultra-thin models from catwalks and fashion magazines has been approved by the country’s lower house of parliament.

The bill, which was passed by the National Assembly on Tuesday, would require models to provide a medical certificate attesting to their good health before they can work. It would also ban the use of digital alterations to make models appear thinner.

The bill’s sponsor, Olivier Veran, a doctor and Socialist lawmaker, said it was necessary to protect young people from the harmful effects of anorexia and other eating disorders.
