Fresh off the conclusion of her press tour for The Dropout on Hulu, Amanda Seyfried attended the Time 100 Gala looking elegant—in an angsty-teen kind of way. Her matte black gown was ruffled at the bust, with a dramatically uneven hemline way above the knee in the front and ending in an extra-long train in the back. Seyfried’s chunky silver and diamond choker says “I’m a rebel” while her sleek chignon and classic red lip say “I’m a lady.” And yet somehow, it works?
Seyfried’s styling may also be an intentional homage to Elizabeth Holmes, the infamous Theranos founder and scammer whom Seyfried portrayed in The Dropout. It’s definitely at least a little reminiscent of Holmes’s signature look: a black turtleneck à la Steve Jobs, bright red lipstick, and messy blonde bun worn low. Though Seyfried’s look is dressier and somehow also slightly punkier than anything Holmes has worn.
According to Seyfried’s stylist Elizabeth Stewart, her dress is Carolina Herrera—but the real star of the look is the necklace, which Stewart revealed on Instagram is a custom design by Catherine Starr of Almasika Fine Jewelry, “featuring De Beers diamonds ethically and sustainably sourced in Botswana.”
The caption continues, “Catherine made this necklace especially for Amanda as part of #BlackIsBrilliant, a project initiated by [De Beers] and [Radvocacy] to amplify Black voices and talent and give them fair representation on global red carpets.”
