Julia Roberts Wore Shorts on the Red Carpet, Signaling Summer Is Almost Here

Julia Roberts wore shorts on the red carpet, but the look is way more formal than it sounds. At the premiere for her new limited series Gaslit on April 18, the actor wore a monochromatic suit that swapped pants for tailored plaid shorts that hit a few inches above the knee.

The 54-year-old actor and her stylist Elizabeth Stewart went all in on Gucci, selecting a full look from the Gucci Love Parade collection that includes wool shorts, a vest, and a jacket. A pale blue dress shirt offsets the vision for a subtle splash of color. Roberts personalized the double-breasted jacket with a butterfly broach from Chopard, and she finished the ensemble with a simple pair of pointed black heels.

Roberts posed with costars Sean Penn, Betty Gilpin, and Dan Stevens on the red carpet, and while she’s best dressed in our book, Stevens certainly made an attempt to dethrone the Queen of Suits.

This isn’t the first time—nor will it likely be the last—that the Academy Award winner has opted for a gray menswear-inspired suit on the red carpet. At the Golden Globe Awards in 1990, Roberts famously wore a suit and tie. She later won the Globe for her supporting role as Shelby Eatenton Latcherie in Steel Magnolias. At the time, she was still embracing her curly hair (that we hope makes a comeback soon).

Earlier on Monday, Roberts wore another suit in “daffodil butter yellow”—as described by her stylist Stewart on Instagram—from Lafayette 148 New York to attend a taping of Late Night With Stephen Colbert. From the looks of it, Roberts has a suits-only dress code for the Gaslit press tour, which seems fitting, given the boss-lady character she plays in the show.

Directed by actor Martin Ross, Gaslit stars Roberts as Martha Mitchell, wife of John M. Mitchell (Penn) and a prominent player in the Watergate scandal of the 1970s.
