Katie Holmes Offers a Fresh Take on the Controversial Wedge Heel

The wedge has undoubtedly made a comeback this summer, with the likes of Amal Clooney, Lily-Rose Depp, and Florence Pugh all sporting (arguably) fashion’s most divisive shoe over the past few months. One of the trend’s biggest celebrity champions? Katie Holmes, who offered a more fashion-forward take on the classic wedge heel while out in New York City this week.

For the opening of a new pop-up Max Mara boutique, the actor and director opted for a pointed silver wedge by Marni (no cork heels here!), which she paired with a satin bronze skirt by Max Mara. The mix of metallics, along with Holmes’s simple white T-shirt, made the look feel fresh; the actor finished with a minimalist white bag from Proenza Schouler.

Of course, it’s not the first time we’ve seen Katie Holmes in a wedge shoe this summer: The style muse was spotted in a pair of black crisscross wedges from APC in August, which she wore with a faded T-shirt, jeans, and a raffia cross-body bag. This time around it was an antifashion statement, an antidote to the more outlandish shoes we’ve seen on street-stylers of late (MSCHF’s big red boots spring to mind).

While the wedge is probably most commonly associated with the Princess of Wales and garden parties, the recent onslaught of wedge-wearing celebrities proves that it can add a refreshing twist to any outfit, when styled in an unexpected way. Call it the “wrong shoe theory” in practice, if you will.
